Anxious about your looks? Lets look at that.

We all have bad hair days. Getting up in the morning and just really not feeling it. It doesn't matter what you wear and how you do your make-up or what you do, from the first moment of that day, you just don't like what you see in the mirror.


Most of us have something we don't like about our looks, the big ears, bent nose or feeling fat. But we don't normally let is get in the way for our daily lives. But this is not the truth for everyone. 


When you are constantly checking the way you look, or how you are wearing something, it could be an indication of physical insecurity. Now, I know this isn't always the case it could be that you are just wearing something new, a colour you wouldn't normally wear, or an item of clothing that is new. Some people have all the luck of feeling confident and happy in their bodies.


What about if you're not happy about your looks? If you have anxiety about your looks, this can lead to depression, which can be harder to deal with. So what to do about your anxiety about your looks. Really the best thing to do is to talk to someone about it. This will help understand what it is you're worried about. There are so many different things and reasons to be worried about when it comes to looks. 


Some reasons could be around the physical look, and by that I mean, a bent nose, or lack of hair. For these issues, you would go to see a professional, you may not need to talk to a therapist about how you look. 


So when would you talk to a therapist?  When you feel that the way you look makes you feel anxious. Together we look at the negative thoughts about what you think is wrong. We can look at finding out what it is that's driving you to these thoughts. 


The next thing to look at the "evidence" behind these thoughts. Work out how to disprove that evidence. I find that a lot of the time, there is no evidence behind the thought. But that is a subject for another post. Working together we change the negative thoughts and irrational thoughts into a positive process. Anxiety is not something that you need to have for life.
